Nanyuki Cottage Hospital is a small local hospital that provides a range of care to residents across Laikipia District (Nanyuki Cottage Hospital is a private charity and relies on donations. to maintain a high level of quality medical care). The hospital is privately run and thus depends upon the fees paid by those patients who can afford it, and the support of donations and grants. Nanyuki Cottage Hospital was seeing more and more patients with HIV/AIDS but did not have the resources or equipment to respond to the need.
With support from Kijani a VCT Centre was opened on the hospital compound in 2004. Since its opening, the centre has tested and counselled 2,096 patients.
Kijani has also raised additional money, through Collier Trust, for a CD4 machine (the only one in the district) and provides funding for Cottage Hospital’s health outreach clinic for nomadic communities in Chumvi.
